Set: The golden road to unlimited
devotion, Streets of your town, I can't dance with you, The drifter,
Are you happy?, The pusher, Good lovin' -> Drums
-> Space -> Drums -> Good lovin', My
flash on you, What about me, I had too much to dream last night,
Christine's tune, Turn on your lovelight, Friend of the devil
Notes: Brotherhood's first
ever show, the band is still a sideproject
of Kiryk’s and Erik’s main band Liquid Visions. The
band is on a "three-bands-for-three Euros"-bill together with two punk
groups. There
are
two versions of a poster for this gig: one says "West coast", the
other reads "LSD"
next to the band's name.

Attendance: 10-30?
Set: The golden road to unlimited
devotion, Streets of your town, I can't dance with you, The
drifter -> Pigs jam -> The drifter, Friend of
the devil, Are you happy?, Dancin' in the
streets (incomplete set)
Notes:
The band performs their second ever concert to a very small
crowd at a
pub in Wedding. An early setlist record by a fan notes a certain "Pigs jam" inside "The drifter".

- Linse, Berlin, Germany

With:
Hempbells, Totally Stressed
Attendance:
30-40
Set:
Tune-up jam, The golden road to unlimited devotion, Streets of
your town, The drifter, A thing called love, Are you happy?, Good
lovin', My flash on you, Dancin' in the streets, Christine's tune
-> Turn on your lovelight
Encore:
I had too much to dream last night, I can't dance with you
Notes: The
Linse is a youth club in the far eastern part of Berlin.
Kiryk is a friend of Gerd, the guy who runs the club, several of
Kiryk's
other bands (Straw Fever, Liquid Visons) have rehearsed or gigged here
previously. This concert occurs on the occasion of Gerd’s
40th birthday (although Kiryk announces it as Gerd's 33rd). This show
has a deliberate party feel to it: not too many people care to watch
the show, most people stop by, watch a couple of minutes and go to the
bar or talk. The start of the concert is delayed due to troubles with
Erik's organ. They install a new one. A couple of minutes of tune up
(during which Kiryk teases The Doors' "The end") and the
show starts
with The Grateful Dead's "The
golden road to unlimited devotion" (the
first of four Grateful Dead-related tunes at this show!). The few
companions in attendance are blown away immideately: the sound is as
original electric ballroom as it gets. Kiryk's guitar playing is
unbelievably hot, he explores various styles but stays close to the
West-Coast language all the time, his vocals are strong and raw, Erik's
organ is way prominent and the rhythm section lays down a muscular
groove. The band sounds like a cross between The Warlocks, early
Quicksilver Messenger Service (with Kiryk being a singer as expressive
as Gary Duncan) and electric Country Joe & The Fish. The
passion of all players is visible, Kiryk sweats, the bass player
constantly grooves - it's just sexy! How they completely make the songs
their own is most amazing. Early in the set HP Lovecraft's "The
drifter" is turned into a serious guitar freak-out. Kiryk
screams
off-mic as if possessed by a demon, he shakes his amp creating mean
sounds while Erik plays an organ that is very close to the one in the
song's orginal version. In the middle of the jam they pull off a weird
dueling conversation between the guitar and organ. The whole
“Drifter”
lasts longer than eight minutes! "Are
you
happy?" (by Iron Butterfly) smokes and rocks heavily.
Kiryk announces
"Good lovin'":
"Der nächste
Song ist von einer Band, die
heißt Grateful Dead...Yeah yeah yeah!" (very few
in the
audience cheer). It is being played very much like the Dead would play
it around 1970 - upbeat and danceable but yet with a long jam
(7+
minutes)! "Love"
(by Country Joe & The Fish) is messed up in
the beginning. Kiryk to Erik: "Love
is nicht in A." And then he adds
"...die Drogen".
After Love's "My flash
on you" we get another
Grateful Dead dance song: this time it's "Dancing in the streets"
with
very cool lead-vocals by Erik. The country-ish "Christine's tune"
(by
Flying Burrito Brothers) is entirely rearranged in order to fit into
the Frisco feeling. It segues into a swinging "Turn on your lovelight"
(Grateful Dead tune #4) to close the set (features drum segment).
Someone from the audience requests a Quicksilver tune before the
encore. Two songs for encore: The Electric Prunes' "I had too much too
dream last night" is announced by Kiryk as "...wir versuchen jetzt mal
einen Hit". A hit indeed. Kiryk's vocals are touching. The
very last
song is the only song by an English band tonight ("Zur Abwechslung
spielen wir mal einen Song aus England...").
This concert
greatly shows
Kiryk's and Erik's passion for west coast psychedelia, for the songs,
the feeling and the attitude. This isn't just a cover band - it's
Berlin's hottest new band! The flyer was issued as copy-shop produced
hand bill in b/w on different paper colours.

golden road to unlimited devotion, Streets of your town, The drifter, A
thing called love, Are you happy?, Good lovin', My flash on you,
Dancin' in the streets, Christine's tune, Turn on your lovelight, I had
too much to dream last night, I can't dance with you
Notes:
The concert takes place at a student-strike event. Reportedly the band
performs two sets in the afternoon. The atmosphere is
rebellious yet peaceful -- the band feels a bit like
attending Berkeley, CA in the Sixties. There is quite a number
of
freaks who dig Brotherhood's music.

Jam -> The golden road to unlimited devotion, The streets

drifter, Are you happy?, I had too much to dream last night, Psychosis,
My flash on you, Old tattoo, A thing called love, Good lovin', Mimi's
tune, Christine's tune -> Turn on your lovelight
Encore:
What about me, Friend of the devil
Notes:
Primal Brotherhood: The band's fifth ever show and Kaleidoscope
showcase #1, organised by Heini and Thorsten! This concert introduces
most friends and companions to the band as it is the first one to be
well attended by the almost entire circle of friends. This concert is
also most notable for the fact that Brotherhood performs original
self-written songs for the first time ever:
“Psychosis”, “Old tattoo” and
“Mimi’s
tune”!
The venue, a very small
but original alternative pub in a small street remote from the
tourists, fills up just a little shy of capacity and the band performs
a great show. Quicksilver Messenger Service's "What about
me" is the
most intense moment tonight
and Kiryk's guitar and vocal delivery of this melancholic
number make it an outstanding highlight of the evening. Handbill by Heini!

A pretty open air concert in a beautiful park played for
parents, children and the elderly. Lots of fun! This free concert is
part of the city-quarter’s cultural festival “48

stage and makes everyone -- kids, senior citizens and companions alike
-- groove and smile!

Notes:
Altlandsberg is a small village on the outskirts of Berlin.
Here, in a nice setting on an open field adjacant to a small lake,
local heads celebrate an annual mini scale free festival with a handful
of bands on a very small wooden stage. The atmosphere is loose,
peaceful, hippie-esque and Brotherhoods performs a sweet open air set
for dancing people. The band would return once more to the festival
in 2005...

Birthday, The golden road to unlimited devotion, Streets of your

last night, Psychosis, What about me, Evil talking, I can't dance with
you, Good lovin', A thing called love, My flash on you, Old tattoo,
Mimi's tune, Christine's tune, Friend of the devil, Can't remember,
Companions -> Turn on your lovelight
Encore:
Mind garage, Dancin' in the streets
Notes:
This is a private birthday party in a mansion situated in a very
small village near Berlin. The band sets up gear open air on the wooden
back-porch of the mansion facing the big garden where tables, chairs
and the buffet are set up under huge trees. Brotherhood makes for a
great
party act by appropriately opening their set with the Beatles'
"Birthday" (played just once again on 13.05.2006).
They go on to perform a full
lenght set that mixes the
newly introduced original Brotherhood songs with the well known mix of
covers. Tonight they debut more original songs: "Evil talking", "Can't remember", "Companions" and "Mind garage".
There are a few companions in attendance who, due to the
abundance of soft drugs, enjoy a relaxed evening with easy dancing,
smoking bongs and tender summer air. Musical highlights of the set
include "What about me", a cool segue from "Companions" to "Lovelight"
and a great jammed out "Dancing in
the streets".
10.09.2004
- Bumerang, Berlin, Germany
Set: unknown but
included Jingo,
Cold rain and snow
Notes: This is not a regular
Brotherhood show.
Kiryk and Erik are billed as "Incents & Peppermints". They join
Ginger Candy, a folk-swing-rock trio lead by Bob
Beeman of Mother’s Little Helpers fame, for an evening of
psychedelic jamming designed after the example of Mickey and the
Hartbeats -- stripped down Grateful Dead with guests -- jamming at San
Francisco’s Matrix coffehouse back in 1968. No Brotherhood
songs are being performed. The focus of the concert is on exlcusive
material such as 60s cover versions, among them Santana’s
“Jingo” or the
Dead’s “Cold
rain and snow”.
The ensemble also jams on a handful of Ginger
Candy’s songs. There are many nice musical moments in this
experiment-session but ultimately the musicians do not find the mutual
magic level. Handbill by Heini!

- Full Moon Festival, Paulshof, Altlandsberg, Germany
Attendance:
70
Set: unknown
Notes:
This is the very first show with Jan Rohrbach on bass! Exact date
unknown. Brotherhood’s second and last
performance at the Full Moon Festival in Altlandsberg, a very small,
intimate, almost private and free festival near Berlin. The festival
ground is simply an open field which a farmer had freely provided.
Freshly mowed grass can be found on huge stacks, some Teepees are set
up for the people to chill out in and there is a very small wooden
stage. There is also a nearby lake where people bath and swim nakedly.
Kids play, vegetarian food is being prepared and when it is time to
have diner all attendants form a huge food circle taking each
other’s hands and saying a mantra before enjoying the food.
Brotherhood takes the stage around 10 pm to a setting sun. The
crowd spreads evenly
across the field in front of the stage, there is a lot of room to dance
and the people swing around gently and barefoot. During the set some
very slight rain pours but the people wrap themselves in blankets or
ponchos and continue to enjoy themselves. The set is a cool mix of
covers and originals. Many companions are in attendance, most of them
heavily dosed on magic mushrooms or hash-cookies experiencing the
highlight psychedelic party of the summer. Beautiful text-book Hippie
Brotherhood!

- Linse, Berlin, Germany

Supporting:
Siena Root
Attendance:
60
Set: unknown
Notes:
This show is one of the first in the Linse’s new
rooms, the club had recently moved to a more central location near
Frankfurter Allee. Brotherhood supports Swedish 70s influenced Prog
‘n’ Psych rockers Siena Root. This is the second
show with Jan on bass. The band sounds slightly ragged, fairly
unrehearsed and experiences technical troubles here and there which
circumvents that the show takes off like a Brotherhood Dance Concert
normally would do.

Notes:
Setlist unconfirmed, from setlist transcription. A very fun
show, very well attended, and in their third concert with Jan on bass
the band makes it really gel and flow for the very first time in this
line up! They definitely sound better rehearsed than at the previous
show and rock through their repertoire with esprit and joy. They peform
a relatively short set though because Erik, who at this time actually
serves a 3 months sentence in connection with the G8 summit in
Gothenburg 2001, has to go back to the penitentiary by 11 pm. The
concert leaves the companions hungry for more...

Notes:
New Year's Eve celebration Dead Head-style in Hamburg. With an
old VW bus they borrowed from a collegue of Todde’s
Brotherhood makes it to Hamburg through a heavy ice-strorm that makes
traffic and road conditions very difficult to handle. Here in Hamburg
at a small live music pub near the Fabrik Altona Germany’s
Dead Heads celebrate NYE for the tenth year in a row and this time they
have invited The Magnificent Brotherhood because the word about them as
Dead cover band had spread beyond Berlin (though at this point the band
is already way past the cover band stage). With their original West
Coast 60s sound Brotherhood pleases the Dead Heads anyway and the band
decides to pull off jams, Dead covers and rare songs galore tonight
which the audience honours with good time dancing and
“Weltklasse”-cheers!
They perform two sets and an
encore -- with a total playtime of 210 minutes this is their longest
show ever! The first set starts around 11 and stretchtes past midnight
for some minutes. After a break during which snacks are being served
the band takes the stage again around 1:15 am to perform another two
hours of psychedelic rock. For any companion who digs long jams and
improvisations generally this concert is a dream come true! A jam opens
and segues seamlessly into “Lifetime”.
“The drifter”
features mainly Kiryk going off on
the guitar in best West Coast language for 17 minutes and even the
garage punk number “Old
tattoo” opens up to a small
jam during the finish. The first set ends with a monumental 20 min
version of “Good
lovin’” which the band
pulls out of their pocket especially for tonight’s audience.
They make it a very danceable version at first before going into a more
dreamy and mellow mode. Kiryk forges ahead endlessly only interrupted
by a lenghty drum and bass solo interlude. They get totally caught up in
the momentum of this jam and thus they forget to wrap up the song by
midnight, so the turn of the year occurs during the jam just before the
conclusion. The second set opens with a very rare coupling: The debut
of “No mercy”
segues tightly into “The
trip” (not on the setlist!), a cover-song, this is the only ever
performance by
Brotherhood to date. Kiryk welcomes the audience to the new year, to
“1966”.
They also debut Erik’s
“Gun or run”
tonight, soon a standard in every one
of the band’s shows. The jam-centerpiece of the second set is
a 17 minute version of “Better
hurry” that finds
Kiryk once more impersonating his Bay Area heroes and wailing away
tenderly with the most psychedelic chord- and notes progressions. Todde
grooves elastically during this jam. Of course Erik gets a solo too.
Yet another hot jam soon leads to a great version of the 60s classic
“High flying
bird”, first and only time ever
covered by The Magnificent Brotherhood, Kiryk does the lead vocals
wonderfully and movingly. A brief but vibrant
“Companions”
goes right into “Turn
on
your lovelight” to finish the second set in true
Dead-1969-style. There is a very brief 20 seconds “Mountain
jam”-tease during Kiryk’s intro solo.
They let it
shine for 16 min and in the middle of the song some technical troubles
force them to bring the song to a halt and half a minute of silence
occurs. Kiryk comments: “Alte
Instrumente, alte
Probleme”. They pick up the jam again with some
blues guitar
noodlings and then Kiryk introduces the chant “...before we
go home we wanna take you a little bit higher”
and they
increase the tempo and intensity again and wrap it up. Three minutes
encore break with the people insisting on a Zugabe. Since the band has
run out of material they repeat “Good
lovin’” for the encore that lasts 17
minutes with a
very interesting and way funky jam. An extraordinary and unique concert
– the longest Brotherhood show ever – as well as a
great NYE celebration featuring the band in in full West-Coast-Jam-band
mode playing very rare songs and jams: combined with the unique crowd
this is most likely as close as The Brotherhood ever came to really
being The Warlocks or the primal Dead! Out of sight!
